LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. – MSU Moorhead golf saw steady improvement across 36 holes as the Dragons competed at the annual SMSU Spring Classic at Wigwam Golf Course in the Grand Canyon State.
The Dragons finished in 12
th place as a team, shooting an overall score of 735.
"Lots to improve on headed into April 8-9 event at Elmwood in Sioux Falls hosted by Augie. With the warm weather we should be able to fine tune our 100 yards and in game," said MSUM head golf coach
Brock Ellingson. "It was a great experience for us down here to get the repetitions and we found out what we need the most work on moving forward. The girls had great attitudes for the whole tourney and we have been soaking up the sun."
The Dragons would shoot a collective 369 on day one to round out the day in a tie for 11
th place with Black Hills State.
Halle Balluff led MSUM on the first day with an 88 on her scorecard. Balluff notched five pars in the round including a trio of even scores on Wigwam Blue Course's par-fives. The sophomore was in a tie for 47
thindividually after one round.
Ellie Fischer was not far behind Balluff, shooting a 90 on day one as the senior holed six pars with three coming on par-fives.
Erin Summerbell would turn in a 91 after 18 holes as her first round featured three pars and three birdies. Summerbell earned a birdie on the par-five eighth hole which spanned 425 yards. The senior would then birdie two of her final five holes with one-under marks on the par-four 14
th and par-three 17
that Wigwam Golf Course.
To wrap up day one,
Charmaine Haas shot a first round 100 with four pars while
Regan Braun would shoot a 109 with three pars.
Day two saw MSUM shoot an overall score of 366 to improve from day one by three strokes. Balluff continued to pace the Dragons with a final round 85 on her scorecard with a consistent 18 holes throughout. The Moorhead, Minn., native would collect a birdie and four pars on the front nine before holing six pars on the back nine.
Haas would see a massive improvement in her play from day one, improving by 11 strokes to shoot an 89. The senior would collect a pair of birdies, one on the par-five eighth hole and another on the par-four 11
th. For Haas, it is her third time this season shooting a sub-90 score.
Fischer and Summerbell would mirror one another in round two with each turning in a 96. Summerbell completed her round with four pars and a birdie to close her day on the par-five 18
th. Fischer would pour in five pars in her round. Braun would improve her score by eight strokes, shooting a 101 in her second round.
