Dragons selected seventh overall, picked to win North Division.

BURNSVILLE, Minn. -- The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) has unveiled its 2025-26 preseason coaches' poll for women's basketball. Minnesota State Moorhead was selected seventh overall in the rankings, but were picked to win the North Division. Senior post Terryn Johnson collected 'player to watch' distinction for the Dragons.

The Dragons earned 140 points in the overall poll to earn the seventh place spot. Minnesota State topped the poll with 215 points and eight first-place votes with Concordia-St. Paul (4), Sioux Falls (3) and St. Cloud State (1) earning the other first-place nods. In the North Division poll, Moorhead earned the top spot behind 43 points and three first-place votes. Mary, Minnesota Duluth and Northern State also earned first-place nods in the divisional rankings.

"Returning four starters from last year's team, the Dragons have veteran leadership which will prove vital with a tough preseason schedule and a grueling conference schedule," said MSUM head women's basketball coach Karla Nelson, who enters her 26th season at the helm in 2025-26.

Johnson collects preseason 'player to watch' honors following a junior campaign that saw her earn All-NSIC Second Team honors. The Kindred, N.D., native averaged 10.8 points per game last season to go along with a team-best 8.6 rebounds a contest. Johnson was one the NSIC's top players in the field goal percentage category, marking a 56 percent success rate a season ago.

"Terryn is a three-time captain for the Dragons. She is a tremendous leader on the court, in the classroom, and is an outstanding ambassador for MSUM within the F-M community. Last year she averaged 11 ppg and 8.6 rpg, while shooting 56% from the floor," said Nelson of Johnson. "She is closing in on 1000 points and 800 rebounds - doing most of this work while being garnering much attention on the defensive end. She logged 11 double-double last season including six straight in January. She had 10 or more rebounds in 14 games last season."

Johnson and fellow post Emily Srejma make up the senior class for the Dragons ahead of the season. Moorhead returns a healthy host of returners in juniors Karlee Fisher, Adie Wagner, Katelyn Maciej and Abby Berge. The sophomore class also brings back a wealth of experience in Ashton Safranski, Caylin Kelly and Ayelishka Teko-Folly. Nelson also added a pair of transfers and five true freshmen to the fold this season.

MSUM is slated to open the 2025-26 season as part of the annual Central Region Showcase in St. Joseph, Mo. The season begins with a non-conference tilt against host Missouri Western on Friday, November 14 at 7 p.m.
