MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Minnesota State Moorhead seniors
Pedro Velazquez and
Mason Gode have entered the weekly rankings put forth by The Open Mat. Velazquez was ranked 17th at 141 pounds while Gode was slotted 19th at 174 pounds.
Velazquez returns to the mat for his senior campaign following a 2024-25 season full of accolades. The Victoria, Minn., native was the regional runner-up at 141 pounds, upending the number one wrestler in the country on his way to the finish. Velazquez would qualify for the NCAA Championships and would complete the season with 12 wins, including five victories over NSIC competition. The senior was named MSUM's 'Preseason Wrestler to Watch' ahead of this season.
Gode also enjoyed a stellar season in 2024-25, competing at a variety of weights, but finding comfort at 174 pounds. The Browerville, Minn., native Held a 19-7 overall record at 174 and 184 pounds for the Dragons, including a ranked victory. He had four wins by fall, three via major decision and one by tech fall. Gode was a weight class champion at the Dragon Open as well. To wrap his year, Gode competed at 174 pounds for MSUM at NCAA Central Region V, placing fourth in his weight class.
MSUM will compete at the DWU Open in Mitchell, S.D., this Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.
