SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – MSU Moorhead wrestling saw a day full of upsets at the NCAA Super Region V Tournament on Saturday.
Ryan Henningson and
Pedro Velazquez earned tickets to the NCAA Championships for the Dragons.
Ryan Henningson would lead the Dragons in the morning session with a pair of impressive wins. Henningson began the day with a fall over Sioux Falls' Beau Klingensmith at 2:07. The senior got into a precarious cradle but was able to reverse into a cradle of his own to score the pin.
Henningson would advance to the 133-pound finals after defeating UMary's Reece Barnhardt. The Winona, Minn., native would stick Barnhardt, who was ranked number one in the country coming into the tournament, at 4:03. While Henningson would fall in the regional final, he still collected an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships with a runner-up finish.
Pedro Velazquez would see similar success in the 141-pound division. Velazquez would pin St. Cloud State's Aleyus Craig at 5:41 to set up a match with top-ranked Cayden Henschel of Parkside. Velazquez, who lost a hotly contested match to Henschel during the dual season, would not be denied on this day. Velazquez would advance to the weight class finals after a 4-1 decision.
Velazquez would narrowly fall in the regional championship match, but still earned automatic qualification into the NCAA Championships with the runner-up result.
Mason Gode would pick up a win to open his day at 174 pounds, toppling Augustana's Coy Gunderson by a 12-7 decision. While Gode lost his semifinal bout, he would work back into the third-place match after pinning Parkside's Brady Schuh at 2:48. Gode would collect fourth-place honors by day's end.
Liam Babitt would start his day with an upset over St. Cloud State's LaRon Parks. Babitt won by pinning Parks, who is ranked fifth in the nation, at 5:55. Babitt would ultimately place fifth at heavyweight.
Clayson Mele also collected a victory for the Dragons at the tournament, scoring a 12-7 decision over Upper Iowa's Jackson Heaston.
