NSIC S&D Day One: Dragons Open Championship Competition

WEST FARGO, N.D. – Minnesota State Moorhead opened competition at the NSIC Swimming & Diving Championships on Wednesday. After a day of events, the Dragons sit in seventh place with 104 points. 
 
To open competition in the morning, Fernanda Leon would lead the Dragons in the 200-yard IM. Leon would qualify for the C-final in the event with a preliminary time of 2:12.87. The sophomore would place sixth in her finals heat, marking a 2:13.47.
 
In the 50-yard freestyle preliminaries, Sophia Verke would qualify for the C-final, touching the wall at 24.17. Verke would collect runner-up marks in the evening's final with a time of 24.27. Also in preliminary action, Tresa Baumgard (25.37), Adrianna Sullivan (25.71), Sarah Coe (26.36) and Haley Stainbrook (26.77) would all set personal bests. 
 
To conclude the morning session, Cami Mayo would finish third in non-finals heats, swimming a 10:53.79. After the evening finals, Mayo would place 11th overall in the event with the performance. Anika Grunenwald (11:14.60) and Claire Schlaefer (11:39.17) would set collegiate bests in the same event. 
 
The 200-yard medley relay would begin the evening session as the team of Kelsey Jackson, Rose Urick, Ruth Pavelski and Verke would place sixth with a season best effort of 1:47.81. Moorhead's squad of Lacie Stark, Mayo, Leon and Maggie Moore would swim a strong 1:48.88 to place fourth in the B-final. 
 
In the evening's final event, the 800-yard freestyle relay, MSUM's squad of Moore, Leon, Pavelski and Verke would swim a 7:51.67 for a fifth-place finish. The B-final would see the team of Jackson, Mayo, Joanna Phillips and Grunenwald place sixth behind a a season best mark of 8:09.86. 
 
The NSIC Swimming & Diving Championships continue tomorrow at 10 a.m.
