Dragons Wrap Home Slate with Marauders, Beavers

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Minnesota State Moorhead wrestling is set to conclude the 2025-26 home schedule this weekend in a pair of duals. The Dragons host the University of Mary on Friday at 7 p.m. before battling Minot State on Saturday at 5 p.m. 

Live video and results will be available at msumdragons.com. Moorhead is coming off a split week of dual decisions, falling to Minnesota State before defeating Sioux Falls on the road. 

Babitt Keeps Rolling...Sophomore heavyweight Liam Babitt collected another pair of victories for the Dragons last weekend. Babitt would button up the dual for Moorhead against Minnesota State with a major decision victory over Callen Smithpeter. Babitt was quick to his offense in an 8-0 major decision victory.  The Soldotna, Alaska, native would turn in a gritty effort to close out the dual for the Dragons in a low-scoring affair with Stetson Davis. Babitt would lead 2-1 in the third period before Davis made a critical mistake, which provided Babitt a penalty point. The sophomore would secure a 3-1 decision to clinch a 20-17 team victory for Moorhead. 

Powell Picks It Up...Senior 197-pounder Wyatt Powell earned a massive victory over Minnesota State last Friday. Powell was leading Griffin Marko 6-0 in the third period before sticking Marko at 6:15. The results was Powell's fourth fall of the season. 

Going Streaking...The Dragons cobbled together four consecutive victories to help secure the dual victory over Sioux Falls on Saturday. Brody Toledo got the Dragons on the board with a 9-8 decision at 133 pounds. Toledo's effort sparked a four-match win streak for the Dragons as Pedro VelazquezParker Benz and Jacob Thomas all earned decision victories. Velazquez and Thomas would earn 4-2 decisions while Benz narrowly missed a major decision in an 11-4 victory over Lane Fink.

Northland Open Results...The Dragons had a strong contingent of competitors at the Northland Open. Matthew Mitchell, Gunner Hostetter and Kish Eberline all captured weight class championships at the annual tournament. Landon Walker earned runner-up marks at 125 pounds while Ashton Leegaard, Beau Robinson and Isaiah Wright all placed third in their respective brackets. 

By The Numbers...Babitt continues to lead the Dragons with 18 victories this season, including a team-best seven falls. Velazquez holds 13 wins so far this season with five coming via major decision. Hostetter has racked up 12 wins so far while Sykora and Powell each have 11 victories. Edon Davis has also notched 10 wins this season. 

Kris Nelson is in his 17th season as MSUM's head wrestling coach.
