TUBBS WINS SUPER REGIONAL TITLE, FIVE DRAGONS QUALIFY FOR NATIONALS

Minnesota State Moorhead senior Tyler Tubbs captured the 165-pound title at the 2009 NCAA Division II Super Region Three wrestling tournament at Marshall on Sunday. MSU, Mankato finished first in the eight-team field with 135.5 points while MSU Moorhead placed fifth with 79.Five Dragons will advance to the NCAA II National Championships at Houston, TX in two weeks, including Tubbs, Tallen Wald, 157, Jarret Hall, 174, Matt Nelson, 197, and heavyweight Tim Johnson. Tubbs posted a 12-5 decision over Tim Matheson of MSU, Mankato in the finals. Hall, Nelson and Johnson placed third and Wald fourth.

RECORD- - - MSU Moorhead is 7-12-0 overall and 3-4-0 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

COACH- - - Ex-Dragon Keenan Spiess is in his sixth season as head coach at MSU Moorhead. Spiess is assisted by Nate Baker.

2008 NATIONALS- - - Minnesota State Moorhead 174-pound junior Tyler Tubbs earned All-American honors for a seventh place finish at the 2008 NCAA Division II National Wrestling Championships at Cedar Rapids, IA. Tubbs defeated Jesse Feinsod of New Mexico Highlands 6-5 in the seventh place match. MSUM placed 27th with 5.5 team points.

CC/NDSU/UV- - - Concordia College erased years of frustration with a 18-15 dual meet victory over MSU Moorhead February 4. MSUM dropped dual matches to North Dakota State, 22-17, and Utah Valley, 31-13, February 8 at the Bison Sports Arena. MSUM recorded four victories, including a technical fall, by Matt Nelson in the narrow loss to the Bison. Tyler Tubbs was 3-0 during the week, including a 9-7 victory over Tyler Johnson of North Dakota State and lifted his overall record to 17-2.

AUGGIE TRIUMPH- - - National stronghold Augsburg College pinned a 41-7 loss on Minnesota State Moorhead February 1. Evan Forde (141) and Jarret Hall (174) produced victories for the Dragons.

MSUM/NSU/JC- - - MSUM produced three falls and halted a mild two-match losing streak with a 35-7 dual meet victory over Northern State January 21. Kelly Janke (133), Derek Bomstad (149) and Tallen Wald (157) recorded pins for the Dragons. MSU Moorhead defeated Jamestown College 33-9 at Jamestown, ND January 23.

UCM JAMBOREE- - - MSUM posted a 2-2 record at the UCM Jamboree in Warrensburg, MO January 25. MSUM fell to Nebraska-Kearney 22-12, defeated Newman University, 28-19, and Fort Hays State, 21-17, and fell to host Central Missouri, 24-14. Tyler Tubbs was 4-0 while Joe Werner finished 3-0.

NATIONALS DUALS- - - MSU Moorhead posted a 1-2 record at the National Duals at Cedar Falls, IA in January. MSUM lost to second-ranked Newberry (SC), 39-3, in the opening match. In the consolation round MSU Moorhead pinned Carson-Newman (TN), 29-12, and lost to Mercyhurst (PA), 29-12. Jarret Hall was unbeaten at 174 with a pin and a decision.

DRAGON OPEN- - - Senior Tyler Tubbs (Chokio) captured first place at 174 pounds and Minnesota State Moorhead landed a pair of second places as well at the 2008 Dragon Open wrestling at Alex Nemzek Hall. Tubbs decisioned Derek Scala of St. Cloud State 5-2 in the finals while sophomore Corey Ulmer (Wishek, ND), 125, and senior Matt Nelson (Burnsville), 197, earned runnerup finishes.

BISON OPEN- - - MSU Moorhead produced five placewinners at the Bison Open November 8 at the BSA in Fargo, ND, including Joe Werner, third at 125, Matt Nelson, fourth at 197, Max Collins, fourth at 285, Corey Ulmer, fifth at 125, and Tyler Tubbs, sixth at 174.






LETTERMEN- - - MSUM returns 11 lettermen, including seniors Kelly Janke (Frazee), 133, Matt Nelson (Burnsville), 197, Tyler Tubbs (Chokio), 165, and Joe Werner (Richville), 125, juniors Steve Carlon (Eden Prairie), 141, and Dustin Nagel (Hillsboro, ND), 184, and sophomores Derek Bomstad (Hutchinson), 141, Evan Forde (Fargo, ND), 125, Tim Richards (Wadena), 285, Jon Swart (Fargo, ND), 285, and Tallen Wald (Montevideo), 157.

RANKINGS- - - MSUM is among others receiving votes on the latest 2008-09 NCAA Division II Coaches' poll. Tyler Tubbs is ranked eighth at 165 pounds.

INDIVIDUAL RANKINGS- - - Tyler Tubbs is first at 174 pounds on the NSIC Coaches' pre-season poll. Joe Werner, 125, and Tim Johnson, 285, are second, while Derek Bomstad, 149, Tallen Wald, 157, Jarret Hall, 165, and Matt Nelson, 197, are third.

LAST YEAR- - - MSU Moorhead finished 12-9-0 overall and 2-2-0 in the NSIC in 2007-08.

NORTH REGIONAL- - - MSU Moorhead placed seventh with 20.5 points at the 2008 NCAA Division II North Regional tournament. Host MSU, Mankato captured the team title with 104.5 points. Tyler Tubbs finished second at 174 pounds.

NSIC WRESTLER OF THE WEEK- - - The Dragons collected three NSIC Wrestler of the Week awards in 2007-08. Derek Bomstad was named the NSIC Wrestler of the Week December 17 and January 14, while Joe Werner won the award January 7.

NATIONALS DUALS- - - MSUM finished sixth and posted a 3-2 record at the 2008 NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals at Cedar Falls, IA. MSUM toppled Ashland College 23-14, fell to Nebraska-Omaha, 37-6, defeated UW Parkside 22-10, defeated Upper Iowa, 17-16 and lost to Western State, 21-12, in the consolation finals. Derek Bomstad, unbeaten at 141, was named the Division II Outstanding Wrestler. Bomstad was 18-2 on the season.

2007 DRAGON OPEN- - - Matt Nelson captured the 197-pound title at the 2007 Dragon Open at Alex Nemzek Hall. Joe Werner was second at 125, Kyle Dukowitz fourth at 157, Kelly Janke fifth at 133 and Shane Walton fifth at 149. Tyler Tubbs was unbeaten in a pair of matches at 174.

2007 COBBER OPEN- - - Three Dragons, including Derek Bomstad, 141, Tallen Wald, 157, and Matt Nelson, 197, claimed runnerup finishes at the Cobber Open in Moorhead.

2007 DRAGON DUALS- - - Rockie Stavn captured first place at 165 pounds, while the Dragons received runnerup finishes from Evan Forde at 125, Kelly Janke at 141 and Matt Nelson at 197, at the 2007 Dragon Duals.

NEXT- - - MSU Moorhead will dispatch qualified wrestlers to the NCAA II National Championships March 13-14 at Houston, TX.
