Minnesota State Moorhead senior All-Americans Jennifer Hensel and Ashley Roemer have qualified for the 2009 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The meet begins on Thursday at San Angelo, TX. Hensel is the reigning women's pole vault champ.

NATIONALS- - - Minnesota State University Moorhead will dispatch seniors Jennifer Hensel (Frazee) and Ashley Roemer (Maple Lake) to the 2009 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships May 21-23 at the LeGrand Sports Complex in San Angelo, TX. Hensel will compete in the women's pole vault at 5:05 on Friday while Roemer will enter the women's high jump at 5:35 on Saturday.
COACH - - - Keith Barnier, a letterwinner at MSU Moorhead as an undergraduate, is in his seventh season as head men and women's track coach. Barnier is assisted by

2008 NCAA II OUTDOOR- - - Minnesota State Moorhead crowned a national champion and decorated five athletes with All-American honors at the 2008 NCAA Division II National Outdoor. Jennifer Hensel repeated as women's pole vault champion with a record flight of 13-2 ¼, Ashley Roemer was third in the high jump, 5-9 ¼, and tied for sixth in the heptathlon, 4,632, Anna VanWechel was seventh in the 3000, 9:58.08, and Sara Julsrud was eighth in the 400 hurdles, 1:01.64. In the men's competition Derik Brugger was third in the pole vault, 16-8. MSUM women were 13th with 21.5 points, their highest national finish, while Dragon men were 34th with six points.
2009 NSIC OUTDOOR- - - MSU men placed sixth with 67 points and MSUM women eighth at the 2009 NSIC Outdoor Championships at Wayne, NE May 8-9. MSU, Mankato captured the men's title with 193 points while Minnesota Duluth won the women's crown with 156 points. In the men's competition, the Dragons received firsts from Percy Watson in the 400 meters, 48.02, and the 4 x 100 relay cast of Cory Shufelt, Watson, Jacob Vossler and Aaron Lund, 3:17.75, and thirds from
Jerry Jonas in the pole vault, 15-1, and Nick Meseck in the triple jump, 45-5. In the women's events, Sara Julsrud was second in the 400 hurdles, 1:03.18, DeeRae Honl placed second in the high jump, 5-3 3/4, Ashley Roemer posted third place finishes in the high jump, 5-3 3/4, and 800 meters, 2:15.83, Jennifer Hensel was third in the pole vault, 12-4 1/2, and the 4 x 400 meter relay team of Julsrud, Alison Streyle, Kristina Anderson and Roemer was third at 3:54.57.
MASANZ INVITATIONAL- - - DeeRae Honl, Sara Julsrud and Ashley Roemer reached qualifying standards for the 2009 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships and the men's 4 x 100 relay crew established a new MSU Moorhead outdoor record at the Ron Masanz Invitational May 2 at the Ron Masanz Track. Honl and Roemer both qualified in the high jump while Julsrud reached the national mark in the 400 hurdles. Brian Kiedrowski, Uchenna Ogbonnaya, Percy Watson and
Brock Keaton joined to lower the Dragons' outdoor standard to 41.78. MSUM women produced four first place finishes, including Roemer in the high jump, 5-7 ¼, Julsrud in the 400 hurdles, 62.89, Jennifer Hensel in the pole vault, 12-5 ½, and the 4 x 400 relay unit of Julsrud, Alison Streyle, Kristina Anderson and Roemer, 3:55.04.
NSIC TITLE TRADITION- - - MSU Moorhead women placed second and the men fourth at the 2008 NSIC Outdoor Championships. MSUM men have won 20 NSIC Outdoor titles, the last in 2001. Dragon women have claimed 10 NSIC Outdoor championships, the latest in 2006.
NSIC MULTI-EVENTS- - - Luke Bucholz finished fourth in the men's decathlon with 6,021 points at the 2009 NSIC Multi-Events meet at Aberdeen, SD April 26-27.
COBBER TWILIGHT, DRAKE- - - MSU Moorhead men (98) and women (129.3) both placed third at the April 21 Cobber Twilight meet behind winning Concordia College. MSUM received first place finishes from Sara Julsrud in the 400 meter hurdles, 63.99, DeeRae Honl in the women's high jump, 5-3 ¾, and the 4 x 400 relay team, 4:01.58. In the men's competition Adam Kne was first in the steeplechase, 9:51.69.
Jerry Jonas first in the pole vault, 14-9, and the 4 x 400 relay team placed first at 3:23.46. . . . . MSUM women placed fifth in the 4 x 400 relay at the prestigious Drake Relays on Saturday at Des Moines, IA. The quartet of Sara Julsrud, Alison Streyle, Kristina Anderson and Ashley Roemer was clocked in 3:54.34. All-American pole vaulter Jennifer Hensel failed to reach the finals.
KANSAS RELAYS/UST- - - MSU Moorhead competed at three meets last weekend. Senior All-American Jennifer Hensel repeated as women's pole vault champion with a flight of 13-1 1/2 at the 82nd Kansas Relays at Lawrence, KS. The Dragons' 4 x 400 relay team of Sara Julsrud, Alison Streyle, Kristina Anderson and Ashley Roemer placed seventh in the 4 X 400 relay with a time of 3:54.93 while Roemer tied for 11th in the high jump at 5-3. . . . . The Dragons received third place finishes from
Brock Keaton in the 100, 11.04, Tony Enyi in the discus, 139-1, and
Brandon Larson in the javelin, 165-7, at the 2009 Tom Cat Twilight at St. Paul. . . MSUM also send representatives to the UMM Invitational at Morris April 18.
NCAA II NATIONAL INDOOR- - - - Seniors Derik Brugger, Jennifer Hensel and Ashley Roemer captured All-American honors at the 2009 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships in Houston, TX. Hensel placed third in the women's pole vault with a mark of 12-9 ½, Brugger was fifth in the men's vault with a flight of 16-6 ¾ while Roemer was seventh in the high jump with a mark of 5-7 ¼. Roemer was ninth in the 800 meters, 2:15.40, and the women's 4 x 400 relay team of Kristina Anderson, Sara Julsrud, Alison Streyle and Roemer was 10th with a time of 3:55.46. MSUM women placed 21st with eight points while Dragon men finished 32nd with 3.5 points.

NSIC INDOOR- - - MSU, Mankato swept men and women's titles at the 2009 NSIC Indoor Track Championships at Bemidji February 27-28. MSU, Mankato scored 150 points to claim the women's crown while MSU Moorhead was sixth, 63.50. Dragon men finished eighth with 59 points while the winning Mavericks totaled 144.5. MSU Moorhead received seven firsts from Ashley Roemer in the women's high jump, 5-5 ¾, and 600 meters, 1:33.85, Sara Julsrud in the 800, 2:15.63, the women's 4 x 400 relay crew of Julsrud, Alison Streyle, Kristina Anderson and Roemer, 3:54.79, Percy Watson in the 400 meters, 49.37, Derik Brugger in the pole vault, 17-0, and the men's 4 x 400 relay team of Cory Shufelt, Watson, Eric Asfeld and Aaron Lund, 3:21.40.
RECORDS/HONORS- - - MSUM set four new NSIC Indoor records, including both the men and women's 4 x 400 relay, Sara Julsrud in the 800 meters and Derik Brugger in the pole vault. Brugger was also named NSIC Field Events Athlete of the Year.
QUALIFIERS- - - Senior Ashley Roemer has qualified for the 2009 NCAA II National Indoor in four events—high jump, 800, pentathlon and 4 x 400 relay. She will be joined on the relay by Sara Julsrud, Kristina Anderson and Alison Streyle, while Jennifer Hensel has qualified once again in the women's pole vault. Senior Derik Brugger has qualified in the men's pole vault.
BEAVER TWILIGHT/SNOWSHOE OPEN/PARENT'S DAY OPEN- - - MSU Moorhead men and women combined for eight first place finishes at the Beaver Twilight on February 19 at Bemidji. Dragon victors included Jennifer Hensel in the women's 55 meters, 7.26, Ashley Roemer in the women's 800, 2:13.22, Anna VanWechel in the women's 1000, 3:06.64, the 4 x 400 women's relay team, 3:55.56, Emily Scholten in the women's weight throw, 48-0 1/2, Aaron Lund in the men's 400, 49.83, Derik Brugger in the men's pole vault, 16-3 1/2, and Nick Meseck in the men's triple jump, 44-11. Percy Watson finished second in the 400 meters, 49.78, and Aaron Lund fifth, 49.95, at the Snowshoe Invitational February 20 at the University of Minnesota while Ashley Roemer was second in the high jump, 5-7, and the Dragons' 4 x 400 relay team placed second, 3:54.44, at the Parent's Day Open at Minnesota February 21.
BISON OPEN- - - MSUM grabbed three first place finishes at the Bison Open February 6 at the BSA in Fargo, ND, including Jennifer Hensel in the women's pole vault, 13-1 ½, Derik Brugger in the men's pole vault, 16-10 ¾, and Ashley Roemer in the women's high jump, 5-6. The men's 4 x 400 relay team of Cory Shufelt, Percy Watson, Eric Asfeld and Aaron Lund placed second with a time of 3:21.60 while the women's 4 x 400 relay crew of Sara Julsrud, Alison Streyle, Kristina Anderson and Roemer was second with a 3:57.31 clocking. Lund placed second in the 400, 50.45, and Mike McConnell was second in the mile, 4:20.16.
SKY KING- - - Derik Brugger set a new MSUM indoor mark in the pole vault with a flight of 16-10 ¾ and climbed to second nationally at the Bison Open.
COBBER OPEN- - - MSU Moorhead men and women pocketed 12 first place finishes at the Cobber Open January 31 at Concordia College. Jennifer Hensel swept the 60 meters, 8.04, and pole vault, 13-1 ½. She set a new school record in the pole vault and maintained her third ranked national standard. The MSUM women also received firsts from Amber Henne in the 1000, 3:13.82, DeeRae Honl in the high jump, 5-3 ¼, the 4 x 200 relay, 1:47.67, and the 4 x 800 relay, 9:21.78. The 4 x 800 relay unit of Sara Julsrud, Amanda Wickersham, Henne and Ashley Roemer set a new MSUM indoor record. Dragon men claimed six firsts, including

JOHNSON CLASSIC, COBBER ALUMNI MEET- - - Ashley Roemer placed fifth in the women's pentathlon with 3,529 points at the Jack Johnson Invitational Classic at the University of Minnesota January 23-24 while the women's 4 x 400 relay team of Sara Julsrud, Alison Streyle, Kristina Anderson and Roemer placed fourth at 3:56.98 and reached the provisional NCAA II Indoor time. MSUM men grabbed seven first place finishes at last Saturday's Alumni Meet at Concordia College while MSUM women had six firsts, including a pair by Jennifer Hensel in the pole vault, 12-8, and 200 meters, 26.72. Derik Brugger won the pole vault with a flight of 16-6, the third best in the NCAA II and a national qualifying mark.
BISON CLASSIC- - - MSUM collected five first place finishes at the Bison Classic on January 17 at the BSA in Fargo, ND. Ashley Roemer reached the national qualifying standard with a winning time of 2:15.21 in the women's 800 meters. Roemer is ranked third nationally. In the men's competition,
Brock Keaton was first in the 60 meters, 6.99, Mike McConnell won the 3000, 8:48.87, Derik Brugger was first in the pole vault, 16-0 ¾, and the 4 x 400 relay team of Cory Shufelt, Percy Watson, Eric Asfeld and Aaron Lund posted a winning time of 3:21.96. Four Dragons recorded runnerup finishes, including Uche Ogbonnaya in the 60, 7.09, Keaton in the 200, 22.92, Lund in the 400, 50.63, and Adam Kne in the 3000, 8:52.99.

Host Wayne State claimed the men's title with 164 points while University of Mary, 214.5, outdistanced MSUM women. Ashley Roemer was a triple winner in the heptathlon, 4,755, high jump, 5-6, and 800 meters, 2:15.36, and was a member of the winning relay teams in the 4 x 400, 3:59.88, and 4 x 800, 9:13.36. Anna VanWechel swept the 1500, 4:42.73, and 5000, 18:35.88. Sara Julsrud was first in the 400 meter hurdles, 1:01.43, and Jennifer Hensel posted a winning mark of 12-10 in the pole vault. On the men's side Nick Meseck won the triple jump, 46-4 ¾, and was second in the long jump, 22-2 ½.
2008 NCAA II INDOOR - - - Minnesota State Moorhead crowned two All-Americans and placed 13th in the women's competition at the 2008 NCAA Division II Indoor. Ashley Roemer produced a pair of All-American performances and placed second in the high jump, 5-7, and sixth in the 800 meters, 2:13.78. Jennifer Hensel earned All-American honors and tied for third in the women's pole vault, 12-9 ½, while Matt Jahnke placed 13th in the men's pole vault.
2008 NSIC INDOOR- - - MSU Moorhead women finished second and MSUM men fourth at the 2008 NSIC Indoor. The Dragon women received firsts from Ashley Roemer in the high jump, 5-5 ¼, 800, 2:16.33, and pentathlon, 3,517, Anna VanWechel in the mile, 5:10.55, Kaylyn Ronke in the pole vault, 11-1, the 4 X 400 relay cast of Sara Julsrud, Alison Streyle, Kristina Anderson and Roemer, 3:55.64, and the distance medley relay, 12:14.57. Scott Egeberg was the men's lone champion in the 5000, 15:25.17. University of Mary captured the women's title with 177 points while MSU Moorhead was second in a field of seven with 131 points. Mary claimed the men's crown as well with 127 points while MSUM was fourth in a field of six teams with 79 points.
2008 NORTHWEST OPEN- - - MSUM women claimed four first place finishes, including Jennifer Hensel in the 60 meters, 8.15, Sara Julsrud in the 400 meters, 61.36, Anna VanWechel in the mile, 5:14.17, and the 4 X 400 relay team, 4:01.23, at the 2008 Northwest Open. In the men's competition Scott Egeberg placed first in the 3000, 8:38.51.
