NORTHFIELD, Minn. - The Minnesota State University Moorhead men's and women's track and field team finished strong at the Carleton Alumni Open Meet at Carleton College. Between the men and women, 17 first place finishes were earned on Thursday, April 5.
The women earned 10 first place finishes to end the day. Mary Tanoe and Anna VanWechel both captured two first place finishes. Tanoe won both the 100m and 200m dashes with times of 12.31 and 25.24. Times of 2:11.66 and 9:44.94 helped VanWechel claim the 800m and 3000m runs. Amy Wulff placed first in the 400m dash with a run of 58.88. A time of 10:55.83 gave Danielle Thompson first place in the 3000m steeplechase, finishing nearly 20 seconds ahead of second place.
The 400m hurdles was taken by the women with three Dragons placing in the top three positions. Karlene Lorenz won the event with a time of 62.30 followed by Kendra Mooberry with a 65.02 and Ashley Berg with a 64.90 giving her the third place position. Berg also finished in fourth place in the 100m hurdles with a time of 15.06 finishing behind teammate Jessica Keesling in third with a run of 15.00.
The Dragon women also finished strong in the field events. Throwing 12.18m in the shot put earned Heather Schultz first place. A toss of 48.82m helped Mallory Stier place first in the hammer throw. Kara Nygaard claimed the javelin throw with a distance of 35.26m.
The Dragon men's team earned seven first place finishes on the day. Derek Bredy finished first in the 100m dash followed by Uchenna Ogbonnaya in third with times of 10.63 and 10.929, respectively. Bredy also finished first in the 200m dash with a time of 21.58. A run of 49.33 gave Aaron Lund the first place finish in the 400m dash with Matthew Loehr in third with a time of 51.34.
Clayton Foster claimed the 1500m run with a time of 3:57.36 and second in the 5000m run with 15:22.55. Runs of 14.11 and 54.94 gave Laquone Robinson a first place finish in the 110m hurdles and second place finish in the 400m hurdles. His time of 14.11 in the 110m hurdles also automatically qualified him for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Nationals. The 3000m steeplechase was taken by Spencer Ruebke with a run of 9:45.46.
The field events were also strong for the Dragon men. Christopher Heil placed first in the hammer throw with a throw of 59.75m. A distance of 45.01m gave Jackson Henrich a second place finish in the discus throw. Michael Bendix and Ryan Barnes placed second and third in the high jump with heights of 1.96m and 1.91m.
The Dragons will continue competition the weekend of April 13-14 at the St. Thomas Invite in St. Paul, Minn., and the St. Olaf Invite in North Field, Minn.
