MOORHEAD, Minn. — In a dual that came down to a tiebreaker, the Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling team fell short on Saturday, falling to Southwest Minnesota State, 22-21 in a match at Nemzek Fieldhouse. The dual was tied at 21-21 but SMSU earned the win by a tiebreaker of scoring more points in the match (45-41).
MSUM fell to 7-7 overall and 2-5 in the NSIC with the loss while SMSU improved to 8-10 overall and 4-4 in the league.
The first tiebreaker was matches won in the dual — both teams won five. Next is total falls, and each team had one. The third tiebreaker was total points scored in the match and the Mustangs had a slight 45-41 edge.
"We wrestled better than we did on Friday," MSUM head coach
Kris Nelson said. "We wrestled harder and the guys were more aggressive than we were on Friday. We just gave up too many bonus points."
After the match was tied at 2-2 going into the third period, MSUM freshman
Jared Goldsmith took control at 125. He scored nine points in the final period alone, and with riding time included, recorded a 12-2 win by major decision to give MSUM a 4-0 lead.
Junior
Blake Bosch, ranked No. 2 in the nation at 133, followed with his 27th win of the season at 133. He took a 4-1 lead after one period and then completed the pin of SMSU's Antonio Meikel in the second period. Time of the fall was 3:49 and the Dragon lead was 10-0.
SMSU won by decision at 141 before junior
Isaac Novacek got the Dragons back in the win column at 149. Novacek controlled the match in an 11-3 win over SMSU's Paul Norgen to push the Dragon lead to 14-3.
Junior
Garret Hoffner also won by major decision for the Dragons, beating Justin Haneke 11-3 at 157 pounds as MSUM built an 18-3 advantage.
The momentum changed at 165 as the Mustangs won by fall. At 174, senior Kyle Begin took a 17-1 technical fall win over Dragon freshman
Brayden Kuntz to cut the lead to 17-1.
The Mustangs won by major decision at 184 to tie the dual at 18-18. Senior
Mike Urban got the Dragons back on the board with a hard-fought 3-1 decision win over Ashton Bartlett at 197 pounds, giving MSUM a 21-18 lead.
At 285, SMSU senior Cole Wilson — ranked No. 8 in the nation at 285 pounds — outlasted Dragon junior
Nader Abdullatif 3-0 to tie the dual at 21-21, which led to the tiebreaker to determine the team winner.
The Dragons wrap up the regular season on Feb. 21 at home against Mary. The dual begins at 2 p.m.
