MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling team won seven matches on Friday night to beat the Northern State Wolves 25-12 at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse.
"This was a tremendous step forward for us," MSUM head coach
Kris Nelson said. "We wrestled great up and down the lineup and won some tough matches."
Sophomore
Cole Jones started the dual with a 5-3 decision over Dayne Morton before sophomore
Seth Hutchison scored a 9-8 decision over Nate Rodriguez. At 141 pounds the Wolves picked up six team points when Kolton Roth pinned
Mason Schulz before Caden Moore beat
Joe Schumacher in the 149-pound match via a 12-5 decision.
At 157 pounds, freshman
Braydon Ortloff picked up a 5-3 win to send the match to a 9-9 tie heading into intermission.
Ortloff's win setting up a streak of four consecutive wins for MSUM, including redshirt freshman
Justin Dravis beating Jake Flakus via fall at 165-pounds.
"The 165-pound match was huge," Nelson said. "We needed a win there and Dravis hit a cradle and picked up a pin."
The Wolves picked up a 6-1 decision at 197-pounds but sophomore
Sam Erckenbrack won the 285-pound match in overtime 3-1.
The Dragons and Wolves will be among the teams competing on Saturday morning at the Dragon Open. Wrestling begins at 10 a.m. at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse.
