MOORHEAD, Minn – The Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling team defeated the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs 25-13 on Saturday afternoon at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse.
The Dragons are now 3-7, with a 2-5 record in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference competition.
"We wrestled well," MSUM head coach
Kris Nelson said. "We knew that it would be a tough dual, and we knew that we would have to come out and perform, and we did."
The Dragons got two pins on the afternoon, with the first coming at 141 pounds where junior
Zach Scott picked up the pin over Trent Butcher in 4:36. Junior
Adam Blees also won via pin, as he defeated Griffin Osing in 3:48 at 174 to help the Dragons build a 22-7 lead.
The dual started at 125 pounds, where freshman
Cole Jones picked up a major decision win over Taylor Curtis. After the Mustangs won at 133 pounds and Scott picked up his pin,
Joe Schumacher won a 4-0 decision at 149 pounds to extend the MSUM lead to 13-4.
After losing the 157 pound match, sophomore
Weston Dobler picked up a narrow 3-2 win over Kegen Fingalsen to make it a 16-7 Dragon lead after 165. The Dragons lost by decision at 184 and 197 but redshirt freshman
Jordan Magnuson won a 3-1 decision at 285 over Ben Thompson thanks to a late takedown to ice the win.
The Dragons will be back in action Thursday night when they close out NSIC competition by hosting the Minot State Beavers. The dual will begin at 7 p.m. at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse.
