ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling team picked up their first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference win of the season on Saturday night when they defeated the Northern State Wolves 36-9. MSUM won a total of eight matches on the night.

"This was a good win," MSUM head coach Kris Nelson said after the dual. "We came out firing on all cylinders and picked up some good wins, including Cole Jones at 125 pounds and Mitch Kotschevar at 184 pounds."

The dual started at 125 pounds, where freshman Cole Jones won by fall over Juan Castellanos to get the Dragons on the board. The Wolves forfeited at 133 pounds, putting the Dragons up 12-0. The lead was extended by junior Zach Scott, who defeated Josh Moore via 8-2 decision at 141. Sophomore Joe Schumacher followed that up with a 11-3 major decision win over Billy Holtan as the lead grew to 18-0.

After two Northern State wins, the Dragons got back into the win column at 174 pounds where junior Adam Blees picked up a 5-3 decision over Kaden Campbell. Redshirt freshman Mitchell Kotschevar was tied at three heading into overtime of his match, and picked up a takedown in the extra period for the win. Sophomore Preston Lehmann won a tech fall at 197 pounds, and redshirt freshman Jordan Magnuson ended the dual with a pin of Justice Horn.

"The big thing to remember is to take this one match at a time," Nelson said. "We are pleased to pick up a win, but we have a tough one coming up next weekend against Southwest Minnesota State, and following that up with the Minot State dual."

The Dragons now have a week off before their next match, where they will host Southwest Minnesota State at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse at 3 p.m. They will end the season with a home dual against Minot State before heading to St. Cloud, Minn. for the Super Region 3 tournament.
