ABERDEEN, S.D. – Despite wins from sophomores Evan Foster and Mason Schulz, the Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling team came up short on the road on Thursday, falling to Northern State 29-7 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opener for both teams in Aberdeen, S.D.

MSUM is now 0-1 overall and in the NSIC while Northern State is 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the league.

"We came out flat tonight and did not wrestle to our potential," MSUM head coach Kris Nelson said. "I feel Northern State has a good team and they were much more offensive and aggressive than we were. We have a lot of work to do and need to improve throughout this season."

The dual started at 157 pounds and Northern State won at 157 and 165 by major decision to open an 8-0 lead. Foster got the Dragons on the board with an 11-4 win over Tanner Wiese at 174.

"Evan Foster wrestled a solid match and stayed in solid position while wrestling physical and aggressive," Nelson said.

Schulz's major decision win at 141 ended a stretch of five straight Northern wins, which included a major decision and technical fall.

"Mason Schulz wrestled a great match against a good wrestler and wrestled all seven minutes hard," Nelson said.

MSUM will host the Dragon Open on Sunday beginning at 11 a.m.

"Hopefully we learn from this dual to come out ready to wrestle and our staff feels that the wrestlers are committed to working hard and getting better," Nelson said.
