Yusuf and Kemp Shatter Records, Win Championships at NSIC Indoor; Dragons 3rd

MANKATO, Minn. — Wins and record-setting performances from senior Nadir Yusuf and sophomore Shyrone Kemp led the way for the Minnesota State University Moorhead men's track and field team at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Indoor Championships on Friday in Mankato, Minn. MSUM, which picked up six All-NSIC honors, placed third at the meet with 68 points.

Yusuf won the 5,000 meters in 14:14.30, which crushed the NSIC record of 14:33.86 set in 2018.  It broke the old school record he set in 2020 of 14:18. Yusuf crushed his seed time by more than 24 seconds.  Yusuf was third in the 3,000-meter run in 8:27.77 which earned him All-NSIC honors as well.  Yusuf now has three NSIC track titles in his career. 

Likewise, Kemp broke his own school record in the triple jump with a winning mark of 50-2 3/4.  That is tied for second-best in the nation this season. Kemp previously held the school record mark at 49-9 1/4.

Junior Chris Cook finished second in the high jump at 6-10 1/4, which was a season-best and tied for sixth best in nation this season. Kemp was third at 6-6 3/4.

Sophomore Braxton Bruer was All-NSIC in the 800-meter run, taking third at 1:54.91.  That was a personal-best time. 

Kemp was fifth in the long jump at 23-1 1/4.  Sophomore Adnew Stueven was sixth in the mile at 4:20.30 and sixth in the 1,000-meter run in 2:33.98. Freshman Sam Morgenstern was seventh in the 1,000-meter run in 2:33.98.

Senior Clay Jackson was seventh in the 60-meter hurdles at 8.55. Sophomore Kendrick Major was eighth in the 400 in 50.51.

Sophomore Ben Oie was eighth in the shot put at 48-9, which was a personal-best, while senior Tanner Berby was eighth in the weight throw at 54-6 1/2.

MSUM placed in a pair of relays. The 4x400 relay was sixth in 3:28.00. That consisted of Major, freshman Ibrahim Oduong, freshman Drew Dosch and Morgenstern.

The Dragons' distance medley relay placed eighth in 10:44.14. That consisted of Stueven, junior Carson Speicher, junior Eric Gibbons and Bruer. 

The Dragon women will compete tomorrow in the NSIC Indoor Championship.
