ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Despite a major decision win by junior
Cole Jones at 133, the Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling team fell short against No. 1 St. Cloud State, 40-4 in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference dual on Thursday in St. Cloud, Minn.
The dual was the final of the regular season for MSUM, which will now turn its attention to hosting the Super Region V championships on Feb. 26.
The Huskies, who are tied for first in the NSIC with Augustana, improved to 12-1 overall and 6-0 in the league. Seven wrestlers in their lineup on Thursday are ranked in the top seven in the nation.
The dual started at 285 and the Huskies won the first two matches by technical fall to build a 10-0 lead.
Jones was strong at 133, dominating his match against Daniel Valeria and winning by a 13-0 major decision to bring the Dragons within 10-4.
The Huskies won the next seven matches, picking up bonus points in six of them, to secure the 40-4 win.
MSUM's next action is the Super Region V tournament on Feb. 26 at Nemzek Fieldhouse.
