MANKATO, Minn. – MSU Moorhead's
Ashley Hokanson earned her third consecutive NSIC indoor championship in pole vault while
Shyrone Kemp (long jump) and the distance medley relay team earned all-conference honors on day one of the NSIC Indoor Track & Field Championships.
After one day, MSUM's men sit in fifth place (14 points) with the Dragon women in sixth place (10 points).
Multis
Hunter Miller would guide the Dragon multi group on day one, kicking off the meet with a sixth-place finish in the 60m dash. Miller clocked a 7.43 to earn 736 points. The true freshman would register a personal best in the long jump with a leap of 20-02.25 (6.15m). Miller would earn 619 points with a 10
th-place finish in the event. By the end of day one, Miller sat in seventh place with 2488 points with three events on deck for Saturday.
Sprints/Hurdles
Ibrahim Oduong would qualify for tomorrow's 400m finals with a preliminary heat time of 49.15, which was tied for the fastest time among all sprinters.
Jerome Crayton would run a 22.51 in the 200m preliminaries to finish 12
th among four heats.
In the women's 60m dash preliminaries,
Shavantae Roberts turned in her finest run of the year, clocking a personal best 7.58. The time is now the second-fastest in school history and secured Roberts a spot in tomorrow's 60m dash final. Roberts would also qualify for the 200m finals later in the afternoon with a preliminary time of 25.19. Roberts finished sixth in the preliminaries with her time only .02 seconds off her personal best.
Relays
MSUM's distance medley relay team of
Adnew Stueven,
Jerome Crayton,
Braxton Bruer and
Colin O'Farrell would earn All-NSIC honors, placing runner-up with a time of 10:08.55. The mark is now the second fastest in school history behind the 9:47.29 set by Stueven, Bruer,
Jared Gregoire and
Kendrick Major at last season's NSIC Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Vaults/Jumps
In women's pole vault,
Ashley Hokanson claimed her third straight NSIC championship with a top clearance of 13-02.50 (4.03m). The clearance is a season best for the senior, who also garnered All-NSIC distinction for the performance. With the mark, Hokanson now holds the seventh-best pole vault in Division II this season.
Shyrone Kemp led off the Dragon jumpers in men's long jump, earning All-NSIC honors with a third-place finish. Kemp registered a new personal best jump of 24-11.75 (7.61m) which is now the second-best indoor long jump in school history. For Kemp, it is the third-best long jump in Division II so far this season.
David Daniels would place 10
th in the same event with a top mark of 22-04.5 (6.82m).
Nicholas Huss would place 11
th in men's pole vault by registering a new personal best. Huss had a top clearance of 14-02 (4.31m) which bests his prior top mark of 13-01.85 (4.31m) set earlier this season.
Distance
Braxton Bruer would compete in the 800m preliminaries on Friday afternoon and qualify for Saturday's conference championship run. Bruer checked in with a time of 1:57.93 to win his heat and earn the third-best overall time in preliminaries.
In men's 1000m action,
Colin O'Farrell qualified for tomorrow's finals with a preliminary time of 2:33.34. O'Farrell finished sixth overall in the preliminaries with the time.
To close the first day,
James Dorado would finish ninth overall in the men's 5000m run. The sophomore turned in a season best finishing time of 15:08.12.
MSUM concludes competition at the NSIC Indoor Track & Field Championships tomorrow with action from Mankato beginning at 9 a.m.
