Young Wins Jimmie Invitational, Carlson Leads Dragon Women

JAMESTOWN, N.D. — Junior Josh Young was the individual champion to lead the Minnesota State University Moorhead men's cross country team to a second-place finish at the Jimmie Invitational Friday afternoon in Jamestown, N.D. The Dragon women, led by a top-five finish from junior Marissa Carlson, finished fourth with 110 points.

Young ran 24:52 for the 8K course, improving on his time from last year.

It was again the duo of Young and sophomore Nadir Yusuf leading the young Dragon men's team, which finished with 44 points. Yusuf finished runner up to Young in 25:01. The two went out at a conservative tempo pace, coming through the two-mile mark behind the lead pack. That's when the real race started; Young and Yusuf pushed hard for the next three miles switching the lead back and forth. They put a 15-second gap on the next closest finisher.

A pack of freshmen made up the Dragon men's top seven. Hunter Kjelshus was 11th  in 26:03, Nick Marshall was 15th in 26:11, and Alec Sanbeck was 18th in 26:29, the fifth dragon runner to round out the scorers. Making up the rest of the top seven, Drew Mears finished 21st in 26:39, and Elijah Herrick was 24th in 26:48.

Carlson ran the women's 5K in 18:23, good for a fourth-place finish. Carlson improved her time by 22 seconds from 2016.

The Dragon women continued to battle with a young squad. Finishing behind Carlson was sophomore Kathryn Sistrunk who took 11th in 18:56, improving 24 seconds from a year ago.  Junior Alicia Swenson was 29th in 20:03, freshman Emily Hultin finished 31st in 20:08, sophomore Whitney Welder was 39th in 20:27 improving more than two minutes from last year., and freshman Megan Kucera finished 49th in 21:10.

The Dragons will next compete at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championships on Oct. 21. MSUM will host the championship meet for the first time since 2011. The event will be held at the Tri-City Soccer Complex in Moorhead, Minn.
