FARGO, N.D. -- In a career already full of highlights,
Ashley Hokanson added another huge moment to her Dragon résumé at today's Dakota Alumni Classic. The sophomore pole vaulter shattered MSUM's indoor pole vault record by three inches with a massive 13'-5.25" vault inside the Shelly Ellig Indoor Track & Field facility. In the process, Hokanson qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships at today's indoor season opener.
In addition to Hokanson's vault, the Dragons notched three other NCAA Indoor Championship-qualifying performances.
Shyrone Kemp (long jump),
Travis Joseph (high jump) and the 4x400 relay team all qualified for the national meet this afternoon in Fargo.
"This was an excellent start to the indoor season. Coach Barry and his event groups have put together a great Fall semester of training," said MSUM track & field head coach
Ryan Milner. "It was awesome to see their work pay off with multiple personal bests, national championship qualifying performances and a new MSUM school record."
The Dragon men finished with at 91 team points good for second place in the team standings. MSUM's women scored 24 team points, finishing third.
Sprints
The Dragon men controlled the leaderboard in the 200m dash with
Elliott MacLennan winning the event with a time of 21.99. The dash was a personal record for MacLennan. Tommy Kern finished just behind MacLennan with a time of 22.24. MSUM would have four other top ten finishers in the 200 meter with
Ibrahim Oduong (22.54),
Kendrick Major (22.56),
Jerome Crayton (22.77) and
Shaquiel Higgs (22.98) all finishing in the top eight.
MSUM was led by
Shyrone Kemp in the 60m dash, winning the event with a time of 7.01. Oduong (7.04) and Higgs (7.05) finished second and third respectively.
Throws
Katelyn Zaiger threw a 35'-6" in the shot put for the Dragons, which is a current personal best for the sophomore. Zaiger finished 15
th in the shot put and also threw a 36'-11" in the weight throw to finish 16
th. The throw was also an indoor personal best for the Colorado Springs, Colo., native.
On the men's side,
Ben Oie and
Jordan Nolan paced the Dragons, finishing fifth and sixth in the shot put respectively. Oie's throw of 47'-8" nearly matched his indoor personal-best of 48'-9". Oie also finished fifth in the weight throw (47'-9"). Nolan threw a 46'-2.75" to finish just behind the senior Oie. Freshman
Darius Sechen finished 12
th with a 36'-4" throw. Sechen finished 10
th in the weight throw in his first collegiate meet.
Jumps/Vaults
Travis Joseph won the men's high jump with a leap of 6'-9.75", which is an NCAA Indoor Championship-qualifying jump.
Shyrone Kemp won the men's long jump with a 24'-4.25", which is a personal best for the All-American and third all-time in MSUM history. The winning jump was also a qualifying jump for this season's NCAA Indoor Championships.
David Daniels placed fifth in the long jump with a jump of 21'-4.75" while
Kade Larson took 10
th in the event for MSUM (20'-3/5"). On the women's side,
Alyssa Ohm placed ninth in the long jump with a leap of 14'-11.25".
Hokanson obviously picked up where she left off in the pole vault, winning the event running away. Hokanson vaulted a 13'-5.25", an NCAA Indoor Championship-qualifying mark. The vault also broke the indoor school record previously held by Jennifer Hensel (13'-2.25") set in 2007.
Sydney Bahls took fourth in the pole vault with a vault of 10'-6".
Relays
MSUM's men's 4x400 meter relay team continued to showcase their dominance on Friday afternoon. The team of
Thomas Kern,
Kendrick Major,
Ibrahim Oduong and
Elliott MacLennan ran a 3:16.9 in the event, another NCAA Indoor Championship qualifying performance. That team won the event by nearly two seconds over North Dakota State.
Multis
Sophia Sowada placed ninth for the Dragons in the women's pentathlon. Sowada finished second in the 800m run portion with a time of 2:31.37. She placed eighth in both the high jump and shot put portions of the event.
Logan Kletscher won the 60m dash portion of the men's heptathlon with a time of 7.10. Kletscher finished second in the heptathlon overall.
The Dragons will not compete again until January 14 when they will travel to Bismarck for the Mike Thorson Open.
