ORLANDO, Fla.—Freshman
Olivia Keelin's win at No. 2 singles clinched a 5-4 win for the Minnesota State University Moorhead women's tennis team over John Carroll University on Thursday in Orlando, Fla. MSUM split on the day as the Dragons lost to Saginaw Valley State 9-0.
The Dragons are now 7-4 on the season.
The match was tied at 4-4 with Kellin battled John Carroll's Katherine Devine at the second singles slot. Keelin won the first set 7-5 but lost the second set, 7-6 to set up a third-set super tiebreaker. Keelin prevailed 10-5 to clinch the 5-4 win for MSUM.
"The team did an amazing job to pull out the 5-4 win, especially after facing tough opposition against Saginaw Valley," MSUM head coach
Oliver Summers said. "They showed their resilience and dug deep."
MSUM won four of the six singles matches as senior
Jessamy Jones also won in three sets, 1-6, 6-3, 10-3 over Nicollette Bourlas at the No. 1 slot. Junior
Ricquel Ramsbottom won a tough battle at No. 3 singles for MSUM edging Jennifer Stroyne, 7-6, 7-6. The other singles win came at No. 5 singles for MSUM as senior
Ricquel Ramsbottom prevailed, 8-2 over Natalie Bourlas.
The Dragons' doubles win came at No. 2 as freshmen
Alexis Konecne and
Olivia Keelin beat Jennifer Stroyne and Andreja Didovic, 8-3.
Earlier in the day, MSUM fell to Saginaw Valley State, 9-0. The Dragons were swept in doubles, with the closest match being at No. 3, where freshmen
Danielle Unruh and
Maia Wendel fell 8-4 to Ana Pico Garcia and Mikayla Kazdan.
In singles, senior
Jessamy Jones battled tough at the No. 1 slot before falling to Izabella Ismailova, 6-3, 7-5. Junior
Ricquel Ramsbottom also had a good match at No. 4 before falling to Taylor McLaughlin, 7-5, 6-0.
MSUM will face the University of the Sciences on Friday to wrap up the trip.
