JAMESTOWN, N.D. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's cross country team, led by a runner-up finish from sophomore Payton Lane, finished third at the Jimmie Invite hosted by the University of Jamestown on Friday in Jamestown, N.D. The Dragon men took fourth and were led by senior Drew Mears who finished 13th.
The Dragon women finished third with 65 points. UMary won with 22 points.
Lane finished the 5K in 18:32.2 to finish second behind UMary's Alyssa Becker, who won in 18:15.4.
Freshman Aislin Anderson had a strong run for MSUM, finishing 10th in 19:28.3. Sophomore Hope Pringle was 13th in 19:42 while junior McKenzie Maki was 18th in 20:05.6. Freshman Grace Dorsher was 22nd in 20:30.0. Freshman McKenzie O'Connell was 26th in 22:04.3 while Zoe Douglas was 27th in 22:05.9.
"The women had a good day," MSUM head coach Ryan Milner said. "We're trending in the direction we wanted to. It was a great run by Payton."
Freshman Ava Marburger missed the meet with an injury but Milner expects her return will further solidify the lineup for the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference meet in two weeks.
The Dragon men had two runners in the top 20 — senior Drew Mears who was 13th in 27:29.5 and sophomore Connor Hayes who was 18th in 28:11.4.
"Drew Mears had a good run," Milner said.
Freshman Carson Hespe was 21st in 28:38.0 while freshman Derek Hanson was 23rd in 28:45.3. Freshman Joseph Espinoza was 24th in 29:04.0 while sophomore Adnew Stueven was 28th in 29:31.2. Sophomore Braxton Bruer was 33rd in 29:54.6.
MSUM's next action is at the NSIC Championships on Oct. 23 in Wayne, Neb.
